Keeping an eye on your neighbourhood
A core aspect of our work and part of our broad commitment to the community is tracking building developments and decisions taken by local planning authorities. We follow local projects in the planning and work stages, undertaken both by private builders and contractors and by government agencies. We are not anti-development but pro-Weybridge — we always work in a positive manner to ensure a positive outcome for those who live and work in our area.
From planning consent on new builds and landscaping works to broader measures concerning traffic, parking and environmental issues, we’re at the forefront of strategy and feedback about major projects. We focus on developments in the Town Centre, Oatlands, St. Georges and Brooklands areas of Weybridge but also look further afield to Cobham, Hersham, Walton and Addlestone because neighbouring areas have a huge impact on traffic in our town. To see what’s happening now, view our Current Activities page, visit the Elmbridge website for all planning listings, and check our Community News where you find other interesting community items.
Experience and action – we’re there for you
With decades of experience, we know when a proposed new development poses problems and we generate our own feedback and suggestions as well as objections to authorities. We may take up individual complaints and queries from residents if the application has a wider consequence. If we find a cause to have merit – a particular project that broadly or specifically disrupts the area and clearly needs to be challenged or changed – we take up the matter on behalf of residents and Weybridge as a whole. As a resident you can be assured you have the full force of an association representing all the community – you’re not alone and together we can change things! We do work for free but ask that you join us and become a member of the Society, as members take priority and we want to know you’re on board with our mission when we take action.
Once an objection is taken up by the Weybridge Society, our Planning Panel liaises with local authorities and elected officials via letters and meetings to let them know about issues and ideas for improvements. From inception to completion and even onto appeals, we monitor what’s going on and ensure as far as possible that changes to Weybridge are ultimately positive for the look and lifestyle of the town and its residents.
A Respected Voice
Because we broadly represent the local population and have a long history, we are taken seriously by local authorities. Our reports and correspondences carry weight. Among our previous success stories was getting Morrison’s to think about its impact on traffic and the look of its buildings when it took over the old Focus site at the bottom of Monument Hill in 2012. We’ve been going for more than 60 years and have a lot of work and success to show over that time. See our other successful Campaigns .
Keep Us Informed
Our Planning Panel works by area (Weybridge Riverside, Oatlands, Weybridge St. Georges – coinciding with Elmbridge Council wards) and we’re always looking for fresh faces to help us identify new developments in these areas and to track what’s going on at the Planning Consent level. For advice from the Society concerning any Planning Application in your neighbourhood, to alert us to a specific project or to offer help in your area, please contact us.
