Due to popular demand, the Weybridge Society is hosting a commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the passing of beloved local royal in residence, Catherine the Duchess of York, who is honoured at Monument Green. The Duchess was so loved by Weybridge residents during her lifetime that they erected this tall memorial to remember her, so we’ll do the same!
Our idea is a simple format: we’ll gather at the Monument (opposite Pizza Express) at noon on Thursday 6th of August, and we’ll read aloud about the Duchess’ life, as written by resident Roderick Archer and published in our newsletter in Spring/Summer 2020. Then we’ll have a toast to the Duchess — and any birthdays of attendees, as there are a few!
As a suggestion, we invite people to bring their own bubbly and glasses, and we’ll add on some spare nibbles and fizz. This event will be informal and fun and we’ll maintain a level of smart social distancing so no one needs to worry.
Roderick may provide more information on the history of the Duchess and then he’s agreed to take people down to the graveyard at St James Church to see her tomb. As he plans to resume doing historical tours in Weybridge, this will be a kind of mini-launch of this initiative, so all interested are welcome! See you on the 6th!
