On Saturday 5th September, the Society had a stall in the town centre to talk to residents about Surrey CC’s plans to improve the pedestrian environment in Church Street, as shown in this video. The plans include widening pavements, planting trees and providing a new Zebra crossing between the Library and the Health Centre.
We also explained the consequences of these changes which are;
– moving the Eastbound bus stop out of the layby
– removing the parking spaces by the Post Office
– removing the pelican crossing lights beside Aromas café
– narrowing the exit from Churchfields Rd into Church St to a single lane. Currently there are lanes for turning left or right and it’s possible this reduction may lead to long queues, particularly at busy times.
Quite a few people had safety concerns about the removal of the pelican crossing, which is a popular place to cross, and wanted a better understanding of the logic behind it. We are preparing a list of questions to put to the Council on your behalf.
We are also considering setting up a similar street stall outside the Library as the views of people passing there might be different.
In the meantime, you can email any thoughts you have to healthytravel@weybridgesociety.org.uk
