Elmbridge Borough Council has approved the application for Churchfields Allotments to be listed as an Asset of Community Value. This gives the community the chance to bid should the Weybridge Land Charity decide to sell the site – but does not give any right to buy. The listing also introduces delays to any sale so that the Community have time to prepare such a bid.
The next step in protecting the allotments is probably the Elmbridge Local Plan consultations that start in June. In this final stage of the Local Plan designations for Open Spaces will be decided. The whole Churchfields site (including the allotments, the Recreation Ground and the residual part of the former Wallop School site) was assessed as the top site in Elmbridge against the planning criteria. It is hoped that the Council will ratify the recommendation that Churchfields is designated as ‘Local Green Space – the category replacing the previous designation of Strategic Urban Open Land (SOUL) – giving a very high level of protection from development. When the time comes everyone can contribute to the Local Plan consultation and show how much our Local Green Spaces is valued.
