A Community Initiative led by the Weybridge Society
Reducing congestion and making walking, wheeling and cycling easier and safer for everyone in Weybridge.
Our Role
- Promote the benefits of active travel and encourage behaviour change to reduce traffic congestion and car dependency.
- Work with councils and partners to give Weybridge residents a stronger voice in shaping walking and cycling improvements, drawing on people’s knowledge and lived experience.
- Support and promote Surrey CC’s Active Travel and Mobility Strategy and Vision Zero goals.
What are the aims?
- Increased awareness of the health and wellbeing benefits of walking and cycling.
- A safe, connected network of paths and streets linking homes, schools, and shops.
- Effective dialogue with councils for collaborative planning and decision-making.
- Investment in infrastructure aligned with local needs.
- Reduced congestion and improved air quality.
What’s Involved?
- Identifying barriers to walking and cycling and ways to overcome them.
- Publicising campaigns and consultations and creating opportunities to listen to local people and understand their views on what’s needed.
- Establishing a Healthy Travel Stakeholder Group to provide a forum to discuss ideas, schemes and plans and link our work to council sustainable travel and safety initiatives.
- Developing a walking and cycling map showing the safest ways to get around the local area.
- Partnering with schools, businesses, and community organisations in whatever way seems appropriate.
- Learning from regional and national active travel initiatives.
Current Priorities
- Share the results of our Walking and Cycling Survey and discuss findings and short-term actions with stakeholders.
- Highlight local issues, including aspects of the Town Centre traffic improvement project.
- Participate in discussions about the future of 20mph limits on Weybridge roads.
- Develop a collaborative approach to help local schools with their active travel efforts.
- Develop/agree proposal for the Healthy Travel Stakeholder Forum and recruit members.
- Launch a network mapping project to identify safe routes and trouble spots. Discuss with council how this will feed into Surrey’s infrastructure plans to improve walking and cycling (LCWIPs).
Scope: As a community initiative, we are concentrating on walking wheeling and cycling. Bus travel is clearly an important element of Healthy Travel, but we don’t have the capacity or the influence to address this at the moment. There is a NW Surrey Bus Users group that meets quarterly and we attend their meetings.
