Celebrity publicist Max Clifford has offered his support to save Weybridge Hall from possible closure by saying he would pay the £17,000 a year that Elmbridge Council has been paying DC Leisure to administrate the hall bookings .
He made the pledge on Saturday (February 19) as he passed the hall, in Church Street, where users and Weybridge Society membership secretary Maggie Alderman were drumming up signatures for a petition urging Elmbridge Council to keep the Hall open.
Young and old users of the facility are angry at council plans to decant them to other venues in the borough and are urging the council to speak up about its 'secretive plans'.
Max, from Walton, who was among the 550 signatories, said: "The hall is used by a lot of old and young people, it would be a real loss to the community. If the council cannot pay the rent then I would be happy to pay it in way of support. It is an important facility and a lot of people get a lot of pleasure from it. I totally support the campaign."
The Hall has had regular bookings seven days a week, and this month all users are expected to look for alternative venues although many of these will not be found within Weybridge.
